French 11th seed Gael Monfils outclassed Lleyton Hewitt in the second round of the Shanghai Masters.
Hewitt won the first set by 6-4 taking a 2-0 lead in the deciding set .He then lost six consecutive games and suffered a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 defeat in the hands of the Frenchman. Monfils now has a 2-1 career record against Hewitt after winning the first match between the two since 2007.
It was a tough encounter for South Australian Hewitt. The world No.14 Monfils, who won his second career title in Metz, France, last month is in his best form. The Frenchman had also made it to the quarter-finals at Roland Garros this year. He lost to Roger Federer in the quarters.
Hewitt, who jumped more than 80 places in the ranking chart this year to his current No.23, had plenty of chances to progress on Wednesday’s game.
Monfils controlled the game in the second set; winning six straight games .He eventually won the match in just over two hours. Monfils will next play against the winner of the match between Ivan Ljubicic and Fernando Verdasco.
