According to a study published in the British Nutrition Foundation's journal, a vegetarian food made from fungus can reduce the risk of having heart attacks and can combat obesity. Experts also claim that fungus food can cut the risk of suffering from diabetes. The study reveals that mycoprotein which is found in fungus called Fusarium venenatum can lower cholesterol and help reduce high levels of blood glucose and insulin.

Mycoprotein is a meat-free form of high quality protein which is made by adding oxygen, nitrogen, glucose and minerals. The high protein can also be available meat free products like mince, sausages, escalopes, deli food and ready meals. The study found that cholesterol level reduced by 14 percent among people eating 190 gms of mycoprotein a day for three weeks.

According to the researchers, mycoprotein might be useful in the management of obesity and type 2 diabetes because it slows the transport of food sugars from the stomach to the bloodstream. Another quality of mycoprotein-laden fungus diet is that it can insist a feeling of fullness after a meal thereby enabling people to get slim.
