Adding to the list of the existing seven IITs will be six more Indian Institute of Technology across the country by this year. The Union HRD ministry has announced opening up of six new IITs instead of merely three which were supposed to open this year in the state of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan. With the announcement by the Union HRD ministry, the total number of IITs in the country will go up to thirteen, with a total of 6,872 seats.

IITs Joint Admission Board (JAB) was sent a directive by the ministry to admit students to three more IITs in Orissa, Gujarat and Punjab. The directive has however come as a ‘shocker’ to the JAB members who had convened in Roorkee to prepare the final merit list. Sources in the ministry reveal that the new IITs have been opened to accommodate the OBC students from this year. All the new six IITs are going to implement the 27 percent OBC quota from this year itself. Two more IITs in Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh are slated to start next year.
