France has agreed to sell reactors and fuel to India, bringing the latter's nuclear isolation to an end after 34 long years. This development came about 24 days after the Nuclear Suppliers' Group amended its rules pertaining civil atomic commerce. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said after speaking to French President Nicolas Sarkozy, 'France is the first country with whom we have entered into such an agreement' after international curbs on civil nuclear cooperation with India were lifted.
This France and India nuclear deal ends the 34-year sanction that NSG imposed on India after it conducted nuclear test in 1974. This therefore is a big achievement for India that has managed to retain its nuclear deterrent, make more atomic weapons and yet be able to source civil nuclear technology from NSG nations. There is possibility that India may strike a similar deal with Russia in December this year. Pact with US is also on the cards. Consequently India will buy nuclear reactors and technology from the NSG countries worth billions.
