Former PM of Thailand Thaksin Shinawatra has been sentenced two years imprisonment by the Supreme Court of Thailand. The apex court found Shinawatra guilty of abusing his power in allowing his wife to purchase a plot of land at a government auction during his tenure. Shinawatra's wife Pojaman had purchased 5.3 hectares of land worth 22.7 million US Dollar in central Bangkok in 2003. Former premier had misused his power by allowing Pojaman to acquire the plot of land.

However, the couple was not present in the court to hear the verdict. Both Thaksin Shinawatra and his wife are reported to have left for Britain in August, fearing unfair judgment. According to head of the panel of Supreme Court judges, Tonglor Chomngarm, the former premier had violated the country's corruption laws.

The judges of Thai Supreme Court are of the opinion that Shinawatra had acted very irresponsibly by allowing his wife to take part in the bidding process for the prime plot of Bangkok real estate, which was owned by a government agency. The Judges said that a fresh arrest warrant will be issued against Shinawatra and he will be extradited from Britain very soon.
