The Government of India has decided to significantly reduce the number of foreign nationals who can be employed in Indian schools, which are affiliated to various foreign national boards. The Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) appointed committee had earlier approved a 50 per cent ceiling on foreign nationals into such Indian educational institutions.
But in order to frame a policy to regulate these international schools, the committee is now proposing that this ceiling on foreign nationals be slashed down to a maximum of 20 per cent. As such, those Indian educational institutions that are affiliated to various foreign national boards can hire upto a maximum of 20 per cent of the total number of teachers from foreign countries now.
In case the said Indian schools want to hire more foreign teachers, then this will be permitted on proper justification on a case to case basis. A MHRD official explained that since India already houses a massive pool of competent teachers, providing employment to foreign teachers in such schools requires a clear policy. It has also been stipulated by the committee that such schools will require authorization from the Central government first before declaring themselves an international school.
