Wildfires in central Florida have caused extensive damage resulting in evacuation of hundreds of people. Interstate 95 and other major roads have been closed down as fires scorched two counties namely Volusia County and Brevard County. Throughout the night, the fire fighters, relief workers and the state troopers were kept on their toes. Reopening of Interstate 95 and US Highway 1 depends on the Florida Highway Patrol.

400 homes were evacuated in Volusia County and 300 animals were taken to safe places by the fire fighters. Homes in Brevard County were threatened by three brushfires, biggest of which has already consumed 1,900 acres of land near Malabar. About 180 acres of land has been burned by the rest of the two. High winds and temperatures coupled with dry conditions are expected to intensify the blaze in Volusia and Brevard counties.

Pamela Keil, member of Florida Division of Emergency Management said that the officials are planning to call 100 additional firefighters to battle the flames in Brevard. Meanwhile, shelters have been opened in both counties and there are no reports of casualties. According to reports one home and one commercial building have been damaged in Brevard County. The officials suspect the several brush fires that started on Sunday to be the root cause of the wildfire.
