As per the new study published in Washington, adding flaxseeds to juices, salads or pancake batter can help to fight prostate cancer.

Dr Wendy Demark-Wahnefried, professor of behavioural science at MD Anderson and head researcher on flaxseed's potential role, says "It's the omega 3 fatty acids and the lignan present in flaxseed that led us to look at flaxseed's prostate cancer prevention properties."

Earlier studies have shown that cancer risks, including the risk for prostate cancer, may be reduced by 30 to 40 percent if people ate a more plant-based diet, which includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds - including flaxseed.

Flaxseeds can prove extremely helpful in fighting the deadly disease. Experts further advise to include flaxseed in one’s daily meal for better precaution from the deadly disease. Sometimes it is difficult to digest flaxseed in its whole form. In such cases, it is recommended to grind it before eating. This shall not only make it more digestible but also help to increase the amount of nutrients absorbed.

There are several ways in which flaxseed can be included in one’s meal. Besides being healthy, they also offer a great taste to the taste buds.

Ground flaxseed when added to cookies, muffins or cornbread recipes gives a mild and nutty flavour. It tastes awesome in peanut butter cookies, or in almost any baked good.

Flaxseed can also be used for salad dressing as well as over oatmeal, cold cereal or grits. It is very healthy to have some ground flaxseed in juice, water, sports drinks or smoothies. Sprinkling it over soup, adding it to yogurt or cottage cheese are other ways of having it in the one of the healthiest ways.

It can also be a delicious breakfast if it is added into low-fat mayonnaise before putting it on a sandwich. Thus, there are innumerable ways in which flaxseed can be incorporated into one’s daily meal.

Demark-Wahnefried says, "Cancer cells migrate by attaching onto other cells. The omega 3 fatty acids found in flaxseed keep cells from binding together and attaching to blood vessels."

He adds, "Lignan may reduce testosterone and other hormone levels. Lowering testosterone levels may reduce a man's chances of getting prostate cancer," the expert added.
