A recent study undertaken on US kids has revealed that drinking flavored milk is as healthy as consuming plain milk, despite the former's sugar content. After the study on nearly 7,500 kids, between 2-28 year age group, it was discovered that those children who drank flavored milk had similar intakes of calcium, potassium, Vitamin A and saturated fats as those who consumed plain milk.
The study also found that children who belonged to the group, who drank no milk at all received less nutrients than the two groups of children which drank either plain or flavored milk. The study findings suggest that flavored milk can be a part of the balanced diet of the child, as it gives similar amount of nutrients and is also relished more by the kids.
A common belief held by parents is that the sugar content of the flavored milk results in weight gain. The study, however, banished this myth as the plain milk drinkers and flavored milk drinkers, both had similar average Body Mass Index (BMI). Banning of flavored milk by parents due to the rising obesity in America is hence no longer apt. The non intake of the flavored milk might only result in the child not consuming many essential nutrients provided by milk.
