The outbreak of a fire on the topmost floor of the Myanmar Embassy in Thailand on Monday 26 May has caused a part of the building to get destroyed. This got the aid groups worried as they thought getting hold of visas for carrying out relief work in the cyclone hit Myanmar may now get delayed even further. Police later however allayed fears by informing that the visa section in the Myanmar embassy is untouched by the fire.

A fireman on the scene said the fire broke out in a room full of documents at the Myanmar Embassy in Thailand. As it is, the authorities in Myanmar have been severely criticized for not allowing foreign aid into the cyclone hit country, where over 1,34,000 people have either died or are missing. The fire breakout happened just one day after UN chief Ban Ki Moon’s held meeting with the Myanmar junta chief and declared that foreign aid had been permitted into the country.
