A huge fire breakout at Asia's biggest wholesale flower-market in the commercial centre of Kolkata’s Burrabazar on Friday 11 April reduced around 236 shops to ashes. Fire Brigade officials said that 16 fire tenders were dispatched to bring down the blaze that initiated at around 8.30 p.m. at Jagannath Ghat beside Strand Road. The bursting of a gas cylinder is being cited by the police as being the cause of the fire-breakout.

The fire brigade officials tried their best to douse the fire in Kolkata’s Burrabazar market. But strong winds coming from the Hoogly River aided the fire to spread out swiftly, said City Police Commissioner, Goutam Mohan Chakraborty. A large number of people had gathered in the area, including crew of various TV channels following the fire breakout.
