Fourth seed Fernando Verdasco entered the second round of Valencia Open on Wednesday. He advanced into the next round as Spanish compatriot Oscar Hernandez pulled out of the tournament with back trouble.
Verdasco dominated the game from the start and was leading 6-1,0-1 when Hernandez called it a day. World number eight Verdasco is one of six players at the Spanish indoor hardcourt tournament who is in the race to book the two remaining spots at the season-ending World Tour Finals in London.
The others who have already made their place for the Nov. 22-29 event include Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Juan Martin del Potro and Andy Roddick. Valencia second seed Nikolay Davydenko and Verdasco currently occupy the remaining two places.
Verdasco will face Janko Tipsarevic in his second round encounter in Valencia .The Serb had ousted Victor Hanescu by 6-4, 6-3.
Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’ hopes to make it into London Finals shattered as, the third seed was forced to retire from his first-round match due to a left wrist injury. He was trailing to Mikhail Youzhny by 6-7, 6-0, and 3-0.
Frenchman Gael Monfils, hopes of a place in London was crushed by Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. The Spaniard outclassed the Frenchman by 6-2, 7-5.
