After setting a world-record in the prelims, Italy’s Federica Pellegrini swam her best to come up with the gold medal in a world record time of 1:54.82 in the Women’s 200m Freestyle final at the National Aquatics Center in Beijing. Her time was 0.63 seconds under the old world record mark. Sara Isakovic of Slovenia, who qualified as the fastest into the finals, earned silver in a time of 1:54.97.
Pang Jiaying of China, who was strong initially, gradually faded in the last 50m, yet she managed to get the bronze medal in 1:55.05. With this time, she set an Asian record. Katie Hoff of the United States, who qualified as the second fastest for the final, came fourth in a time of 1:55.78. Camelia Alina Potec of Romania finished in fifth place in a time of 1:56.87.
