A township in Punjab has become the first ever place in the country to implement a unique concept of creating a "Car Free City" in the region. In the small town of Fazilka, motorized four-wheeled vehicles and heavy vehicles have been prohibited to move during the day-time (12 hours). “Traffic calming devices” have been installed to make the zone pedestrian and cycle-friendly. Besides the administration, the residents of the area are also cooperating strictly by not using their motorized vehicles in the region.
According to Mr. Anil Sethi, President of the Municipal Council of Fazilka, the 'Car Free City' concept may act as an inspiration for rest of the country. The 21st century is governed with the agenda to pacify the affect of Global Warming and Fazilka town is going to be the flag bearer for the cause of suppressing effect of Global Warming through energy conservation and transportation, he added.
The unique concept was first launched in 2007, during the week-long "Fazilka Heritage Festival". A research study, conducted in the region, revealed that, the experiment had not just improved the quality of social life but also improved the law and order and environment through less air pollution emitted, economy and road safety of the residents.
