Taking a glass of fat free milk rather than having a fruit makes you feel fuller and have a smaller lunch.

The Australian researchers, who conducted the study, discovered that drinking fat free milk for breakfast helps to boost satiety. This also helps in taking a smaller meal during lunch.

The study found that those who used to drink milk for breakfast had 9% less food during lunch.

The study was conducted on 34 overweight but healthy men and women in two sessions. In the first test session, they were given 20 ounces of fat free milk and in the other they were given 20 ounces of fruit drink.

The feeling of fullness was measured for all these people during the four hours between breakfast and lunch. After that they were given a comfortable lunch.

The researchers found that the milk-drinking adults reported feeling fuller, more satisfied and therefore ate fewer calories at lunch.

The researchers feel that the lactose, the protein found in milk or even the thickness of the milk can enhance satiety benefits.

Choosing foods that can help enhance satiety is an important success factor in any weight management plan, the researchers suggest.

The study has been published in the July issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
