The National Conference party of Jammu and Kashmir has got former CM Farooq Abdullah as its president once again. Farooq Abdullah was made the president of the party because Omar Abdullah who earlier held the post became the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir on January 5. Farooq Abdullah had handed over the post of party president to his son, junior Abdullah in 2002.
 
The NC took the decision to make Farooq the president at an extraordinary meeting of the working committee. NC's senior leader Sharifuddin Shariq and provincial president Mehboob Beg proposed the name of senior Abdullah for the post of president. The meeting was attended by the newly elected MLA from Noorabad, Sakina Itoo, Abdur Rashid Shaheen, MP from Baramulla, and general secretary Sheikh Nazir Ahmed including the members of the working committee.
 
After taking over as the president of the national Conference, Farooq Abdullah said that his first and foremost aim will be to strengthen the party at every level. While interacting with the media, Farooq Abdullah said that he will hold the office of party's president till May and after that, a two-day convention at the State level will be organized. At the two-day convention, MLAs and district presidents will vote for the person whom they want as the party's president.
 
Dr Farooq Abdullah took the charge of party's president in September 1981 after his father stepped down. . He transferred the responsibility to Mr. Omar Abdullah in 2002 with a view to infusing new blood into the party. Dr Abdullah assured that the NC and the Congress will jointly fight the coming Lok Sabha elections in the State.
