Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland lived up to his pre-race favorite status, as he won the gold medal in the Men’s Individual Time Trial. The Swiss lad displayed his sharp knack to get going on a grueling, two-lap 47.3 km course. Cancellara warded off a strong challenge from Gustav Larsson of Sweden to become the first Olympic Time Trial champion of Switzerland. While Larsson managed to get the silver, Levi Leipheimer of the United States settled on the bronze. Cancellara concluded in a time of 1:02:11.43 (45.633kph) to get gold.
Larsson did well throughout, but succumbed to his Swiss rival in the final 13km. He finished in 1:02:44.79, 33.36 off the wining pace of Cancellara. With this medal, Larsson became the Sweden’s first modern Olympic Time Trial medalist after the reintroduction of game. Leipheimer has grabbed his first Olympic medal with bronze, in a time of 1:03:21.11, 1:09.68 off the winning time. His medal marks the third-consecutive Olympic Games that US men received medals in the Individual Time Trial.
