The scientists have come up with a new instrument for detecting the explosives even from a distance of 100m. According to the sources, these detectors are highly sensitive and hence can be used for saving numerous lives and spoil the plans of terrorists.
The detector has been developed by a research team at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and is based upon the photo-induced acoustic spectroscopy (PIAS).
Using this technology, the military as well as law enforcement agencies shall have an instrument which is one-tenth the size of other detectors. This is five pounds and is just 1/5th the weight and cost of its competitors.
The detector works by illuminating the explosive under suspicion using an eye-safe laser which allows the scattered light to be detected using a quartz crystal tuning fork.
After few more steps, the instrument will identify numerous explosives without jeopardising the safety of the operator.
