A German Stroke Foundation has said that exercising lowers stroke risk. The Foundation noted that too little exercise and obesity were among the main reasons behind a stroke.
The Foundation said that regular exercise and a balanced diet could prevent half of the strokes in Germany adding that cardiovascular incidents like stroke were the third-most frequent cause of early retirement in the country.
The Foundation further said that exercising more was just a matter of making small changes in one's daily routine, for example, riding a bicycle to work in place of using a car or taking public transport. In stormy weather, office goers who prefer driving rather than riding to work could park some distance away from the office and walk the rest of the way.
It cited a study by the Berlin-based polling institute Forsa showing that a quarter of all workers in Germany work right through their break even though it presents a good opportunity to stretch their legs for at least a few minutes. Generally speaking, adults should exercise at least 30 minutes every day to keep healthy. The Foundation proposed that people check their exercise routine with an ‘exercise book’ in which they write down all of their physical activities like jogging or cycling.
As per the Foundation, exercising for 30 minutes at a time is not necessary because every physical activity lasting longer than 10 minutes is useful.
