In midst of continued fighting between Russia and Georgia, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, and Finland Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb, head of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) recently met with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili to restore peace in the region.
First thing necessary to initiate peace according to peacemakers is to stop the conflict between Georgia and Russia. The mediator states want immediate ceasefire by all warring parties. Bernard Kouchner has suggested for quick treatment facilities to all the wounded during a ceasefire.
Accordingly, another measure to be adopted is the withdrawal of all troops on both sides. And, the withdrawal should be under the observance of mediators. There would be peace talks and political negotiations after the withdrawal of armed forces.
There are reports on low intensity conflict, particularly after the decision from Georgian government to go for a unilateral ceasefire. However, Russian troops have occupied the region of South Ossetia and capital Tskhinvali. Observers hope that peace may prevail with their efforts in the region.
