Switzerland on Sunday defeated group winners Portugal in their Euro 2008 group A match. The Swiss departed the European Championship with their heads held high, with Hakan Yakin scoring twice in the second half. A 71 minute goal and a penalty in the 83rd minute by playmaker Yakin helped the co-host of the tournament to beat Luiz Felipe Scolari’s side.
The Swiss, who lost both of their previous games were, had been out of hope whatever the result of Sunday’s game. On the other hand Portugal had already booked a place for itself in the quarterfinals, with two impressive wins over Turkey and the Czech Republic ahead of the Sunday match. Portugal coach Scolari took the Sunday Opportunity to rest most of the players, who will be back on Thursday to contest in the quarter-finals against Germany, Austria or Poland. The Portugal side made eight changes in the Sunday match and rested the entire midfield and attacking line.
