World champions Italy beat world cup finalist France in another nailbiting match in the Euro Cup 2008 in Zurich on Tuesday, to advance into the quarterfinals. The world champions beat old foes France 2-0 as the latter exited from the European championship. Italy opened its account in the 25th minute, with Andrea Pirlo converting the penalty into goal.

The French were unable to open their account in the first half as Italy’s Daniele de Rossi added Italy’s second goal in the 62nd minute. The win for Italians would have been inconsequential if the Romanians would have had beaten Holland. But the Dutch instead beat Romania 2-0 in order to help Italy to progress into last eight. Italy, playing against ten men, wrapped up the victory in style on Tuesday. The Italians will now take on Spain in Vienna on Sunday night. For France on the other hand, it was a nightmare match as it lost key man Franck Ribery to serious injury only after seven minutes. To make matters worse, defender Aric Abidal was sent off for hauling down Luca Toni in the area.
