England played well in a must-win game to beat Pakistan by 48 runs at the Oval on Sunday. This is a welcome win for England after having lost to Netherlands on Friday. England’s win was scripted by a 38-ball 58 runs by Kevin Pietersen.

Pakistan won the toss and chose to field. England lost Ravi Bopara early but a 53-run stand between Luke Wright and Pietersen set things up for a big total. Wright hit a belligerent 34 off 16 balls, studded with 6 fours and a six.

After Wright got out, Pietersen continued to steer the innings and ensured England did not lose the way. England posted 185 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. Pakistan started badly and were reduced to 41 for 3. Stuart Broad claimed 2 wickets in 2 balls to dismiss Kamran Akmal and Salman Butt. His match figures stood at 3 for 17 off 3 overs.

Luke Wright won the man-of-the-match award for his all-round performance. With this loss, there is a tremendous pressure on Pakistan. The team plays Netherlands at Lord’s on Tuesday. It will be a do-or-die match for Pakistan.
