Even though government has given the green signal for the over-the-counter sales of emergency contraceptive drugs like Cipla’s I-pill and Mankind Pharma’s Unwanted-72, it said these manufacturer need to adhere to certain government restrictions while advertising the drugs, so that misuse of these after-morning pills can be avoided.

A committee will be set up for examining the effects and side-effects of six commonly used drugs like anti-depression drug Deanxit, the presence of phenylpropanolamine in anti-cold drugs like Solvin and Wincold, analgesic Nimesulide, gastrointestinal drug Tegaserod as well as the antibacterial drug Gatifloxacin.

According to sources, the emergency contraceptive pills have been retained as over-the-counter drugs as if they are enforced as prescription drugs, ‘‘the purpose of making them available to users at the shortest possible time, will be defeated’’.
