Singer Elton John has decided to go further with his plans to perform at the Morocco’s biggest music festival despite of intense pressure from the country’s main Islamist party to cancel his show. The British singer’s homosexuality is the reason that the party is opposing the event.

El Hassan Neffali, the Mawazine Festival organizer quoted, “We deal with artists and intellectuals for what they do, without taking into account their private life."

"Somebody’s private life is one thing, and their art or creative activities are another," Neffali added.

The event which kicked started on May 21 will see the performances of other artist like, Sting, Mika and Carlos Santana, along with a host of Arab music stars.

The new rift between the Morocco’s Western-leaning authorities and the more conservative Muslim movements is on the rise in the North African kingdom.

"This singer is famous for his homosexual behaviour and for advocating it. We’re a rather open party, but promoting homosexuality is completely unacceptable," Mustapha Ramid, a leader and spokesman for the PJD, the biggest opposition party with 40 lawmakers in parliament said.
