A new method which enables self destruction of electronic data has been developed by researchers of University of Washington.

The method helps to make electronic communication such as chat messages,Facebook posts and email to get destructed automatically, thus making it irretrievable from all websites, outboxes, inboxes, backup sites and home computers.

The text uploaded to any web service through a web browser can be allotted a certain time limit with the help of prototype system called ‘Vanish’. The text automatically gets destroyed after the set time expires.

The data cannot be retrieved even by the sender.

"If you care about privacy, the Internet today is a very scary place," said Tadayoshi Kohno, a UW assistant professor of computer science. "If people understood the implications of where and how their e-mail is stored, they might be more careful or not use it as often."

“Computers have made it virtually impossible to leave the past behind with people inadvertently uploading data they find embarrassing later,” he said.

The project paper will be presented at the Usenix Security Symposium that will take place from August 10-14 in Montreal.
