According to IISc, Bangalore, electricity of about 18,000 MW can be produced annually from farm waste.

The National Biomass Resource Atlas that was recently prepared by the institute estimates that 120-150 million tonnes of farm waste are available that can be used for this purpose every year. This information was provided to the Rajya Sabha by Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Farooq Abdullah.

Currently about 1,870 MW is being generated via 220 projects, where as 170 more projects are being implemented to generate 2,170 MW more.

Many fiscal incentives for setting up of power generation projects from biomass throughout the country like concessional customs duty on import of machineries and components, excise duty exemption, etc will be provided by Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA), and other financial institutions.

Apart from this, 14 states give preferential tariff for sale of power from commercial biomass power projects.
