After serving notices to Varun Gandhi for his alleged derogatory remarks against a minority community the Election Commission (EC) on Sunday (22nd March) night announced its final verdict on this issue. In the verdict EC found him guilty of breaching the model code of conduct. An order issued by EC on Sunday (22nd March) said, it condemned the young politician and also asked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) not to nominate him as a candidate.

The EC describes Varun Gandhi's speech as highly derogatory, provocative and totally unacceptable. The commission also said that, Varun doesn't deserve to contest elections. However, BJP spokesperson Balbir Punj said that, the EC's decision has been unprecedented as till now no political party has been asked not to field a candidate.

Earlier, the Commission had issued notices to Varun and the BJP. In his response, Varun had questioned the genuineness of the CD. Now, EC says none of the replies filed by Varun is convincing and it is quite convinced that the CD is not tampered with. Already two criminal cases have been lodged against Varun. But the EC cannot bar him from contesting, till he's convicted by a court of law, for a period of over two years.
