Nupur Sharma of Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has become president of DUSU for the session 2008-09 (Delhi University Students Union). She defeated Sonia Sapra of NSUI (National Students Union of India) with a margin of 1,639 votes. Nupur Sharma got 10,345 votes. Nupur Sharma, a Law student at University of Delhi is the only candidate to win from ABVP in the elections. Nupur will substitute Amrita Bahri, the ex-president of NSUI.
Manohar Nagar of NSUI won the post of vice president. On the other hand, NSUI's Amit Chaudhary won the general secretary seat, and Ashish Gehlot became the joint secretary of DUSU. This is another year when Congress' student wing NSUI has been dominating the DUSU elections. Reportedly, about 65 officials were engaged in counting of votes that began at 9 am.
DUSU elections, considered the most glamorous student union elections in the country were conducted on Friday at 36 booths in the north campus and affiliating colleges in which an estimated 40 per cent voters turned up to cast votes. Low turn-out of vote is a major concern and shows the growing disinterest among students in student politics. Interestingly enough, last two presidents of DUSU have been elected from Faculty of Law of the university.
