The researchers at the University of Oxford have claimed that drinking milk can prevent Alzheimer’s disease in old age. The research study found out a particular vitamin that can reduce neurological damage to the brain. The neurological damage can easily lead to dementia. The deficiency of vitamin B12 in older adults causes shrinkage of the brain. The study revealed that increase of vitamin B12 in human body can help fight Alzheimer’s disease.
According to Professor David Smith of Oxford University, one can increase the level of vitamin B12 just by drinking two glasses of milk a day. The study showed that taking half a litre of milk or more per day can lead to marginal increase of B12 which completely eliminates the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Compared to meat which contains highest amount of Vitamin B12, milk is absorbed rapidly by adult human body.
The study revealed that elderly human body absorbs 55 percent of the vitamin in milk. While clarifying the doubts on meat, Smith said that B12 is tightly bonded with protein in meat and hence this bond has to be broken down by acid in the stomach before the body can use it. The level of acid is lower in older people thus, it is much harder for them to get B12 from meat, he added. On the other hand, milk stood out to be an easy source of generating B12 in elderly body.
