More IIT graduates have opted for the jobs in Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), this time, due to stability factor. Brilliant graduates from the IITs were known for bagging top-notch offers from multinationals, with six-figure salaries. On the previous occasions, DRDO labs could manage to hire only one or two graduates from IITs. DRDO labs conduct R&D work in sectors like aeronautics, navy, life sciences, etc.
IITians have accounted for 12% of the total recruitment at DRDO. The change in trend could be due to recession. There has been a generous pay hike in the 6th Pay Commission. After the hike, the salary packages and the promotions have been closer to those in private companies. These factors have improved the career growth prospects.
The scientists, up to the level H, do not have to wait for the vacancies to get themselves promoted. Apart from this, there is an allotment for awards worth Rs 2 crore, annually. DRDO hires at least 500 scientists each year. This time, about 60 IITians have been recruited. This amounts to 12% of the total appointees. But the label of IIT does not give the graduates any additional weightage. The employees are recruited through an entrance test and campus interviews across various premier colleges.
