The space shuttle Discovery undocked from the International Space Station (ISS) on Tuesday. The shuttle is expected to reach Earth on Thursday.

Space station astronaut Michael Barratt said, “We’re pretty fat with supplies now thanks to you. God speed you on your way home."

The shuttle astronauts made the essential survey in the evening to check for any signs of micrometeorite damage to ensure for a safe return.

LeRoy Cain, chairman of the mission management team said, “The mission is far from complete for us, but we couldn't be more pleased with how it's gone.”

The nine day mission of Discovery aimed at supplying equipment and experiments at ISS. Astronaut Nicole Stott replaced Timothy Kopra in the ISS crew.

Kopra on Tuesday marked his 55th day in space. Kopra was eager to return home to meet his wife and two children.

Discovery also brings back home the 12-inch action figure “Buzz Lightyear” which  spent 15 months at the space station as part of a NASA educational program.  The doll will participate in a tickertape parade at Walt Disney World early next month.

The IIS now has six astronauts who would continue their own lengthy missions. Stott will remain with the IIS crew till November.
