Dinara Safina of Russia topped the list of women's tennis rankings by dethroning Serena Williams of United States. By clinching the number one position, the 22-year-old Russian player made history. It is worth mentioning that her brother Marat Safin held the top position of men's rankings for nine weeks in 2000. This is for the first time in tennis history that both brother and sister clinched the top slot in single rankings.

After achieving the top slot, Safina expressed her happiness by saying it is a great honour for her. The elated tennis star said that it is a great achievement to follow her brother Marat Safin. The Russian star has been in wonderful form since the last season. Safina lost the final of 2009 Australian Open against Serena Williams.

The 22-year-old Russian tennis player attributes her success to coach Zeljko Krajan, who helped her immensely to reach the top spot. Dinara Safina won the women's doubles title at the 2007 US Open with Nathalie Dechy and bagged the Olympic silver medal in women's singles at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. She considers Marat Safin as her idol and hopes to do better in the forth-coming matches.
