The Democratic Party of United States in a severe blow to New York Senator Hillary Clinton has restored the states of Michigan and Florida to its presidential convention with only half of their voting power. The decision has taken Barack Obama, two giant strides closer to making history as United States first Presidential black nominee. It is a major setback to Clinton ahead of Sunday’s primary in Puerto Rico.
The Democratic National Committee's rules and by-laws panel voted on Saturday, May 31, 2008 to reject full voting rights to primary votes in the states by giving each of their delegates half a vote. Clinton won both unofficial contests and Obama was not on the ballot on Michigan. Clinton’s supporters reacted with fury to the compromise and maintained that Obama should get no delegate as he withdrew his name, to be replaced by an ‘uncommitted’ category. Meanwhile, Barack Obama's campaign manager David Plouffe said he was ‘extremely gratified’at the decision.
