Dell is going green; it will use energy efficient and environment friendly mercury-free light-emitting diodes (LED) to illuminate laptop screens. The firm will start the production of the same from mid-December this year. According to Dell source, the LED displays consume 43 percent less energy for 15-inch screens than ones lit with CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps).
Currently, Dell is using CCFL technology and from December onwards, it will start using LED. Laptops with LED screens will share about two-thirds of Dell's notebook sales. Its 'Latitude E' and two Precision mobile workstation models are covered under the new project. However, Dell is not the only firm to go green; HP too has begun selling optional LED-backlit screens on some of its laptops and tablet computers
According to Texas-based firm, LED backlit displays will be standard in at least 80 percent of the laptops it sells by the end of 2009. Also, the same would be implemented in all its notebooks by the end of 2010. Interestingly, California-based Apple already uses LEDs in its MacBook Air, its 15-inch MacBook and one configuration of the 17-inch MacBook Pro. Also, the same feature is available in all iPods and iPhones.
