According to reports, the targeted subsidy of Re. 1 per unit for the domestic consumers who use a limited amount of electricity will be continued by the Delhi government.
"Targeted subsidy of Re.1 per unit for all domestic consumers restricting their consumption up to 150/200 units per month in off-peak/peak months would continue. This targeted subsidy has been in existence from March 2008," Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit announced in New Delhi after the cabinet meeting.
According to her, the agricultural consumers will also be receiving the benefit of the special subsidy. The Re. 1 per unit subsidy for both the domestic and agricultural sectors had expired on 31 May, 2009.
Sheila Dikshit told that the decision for continuing with the special subsidy has been adopted by the government to prove that her government is committed to relieve those domestic consumers who are in a completely helpless condition as they have to restrict their monthly power consumption due to high rates.
The special subsidized tariff of Re. 1 will be applicable to all those domestic consumers who have a maximum monthly consumption of 150 units during the off-peak months of March, April, September, October, November and February and a maximum of 200 units during the peak months of May to August and between December and January.
"This would go a long way in effecting a huge power saving. The targeted subsidy is for the economically weaker sections of the society," it added.
The agricultural consumers will be entitled to get electricity at a cheaper rate - Rs.1.55 less per unit than the normal rate.
