The Public Distribution System of New Delhi is waiting for a total revamping with the Delhi government looking into various options with the Planning Commission to avoid corruption.
"The Planning Commission has taken strong view of corruption in the PDS system and demanded ways to improve it. Various options such as credit card, coupon system or money transfer to the account of the beneficiaries of the PDS are being considered as suggested by the Delhi government," a senior official of Delhi Finance Department said.
He further said the options are under discussion. He told that once they modality has been finalised they will be implemented in one of the districts on a trial basis. The issue was hardly discussed during the recent meeting of Planning Commission Deputy Chairperson Montek Singh Ahulwalia with Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, that had aimed at the finalisation of the plan expenditure for Delhi.
Dikshit has also expressed her concern at the unrestricted corruption in the PDS system. "We have sought suggestions from the Commission on how to plug loopholes so that grains and kerosene oil sold through ration shops reach the target beneficiaries," Dikshit had said.
Several instances of deceptive practices are being exposed where even the officials of Food and Supplies Department were found to have joined hands with the middlemen, diverting the subsidised food grains and kerosene oil to the open market.
