In a survey conducted by industry chamber Assocham, Delhi is the most unsafe city for women working at night. The survey establishes that a majority of 65 per cent of women in Delhi interviewed felt insecure working in night shifts. However, working women in Mumbai felt safer with just 26 per cent complaining about security during night shifts.
Similarly, India's IT capital Bangalore is the second most unsafe place for working women. The survey said that 56 per cent of those polled expressed a sense of insecurity in working in night shift. It seems safety and security of women employees during night shifts is at lowest. Women workers in Hyderabad and Chennai with 35 per cent and 28 per cent respectively feel unsafe during night shifts.
The Assocham surveyed working women in BPO industry, IT firms, airlines, hospitals and media. These new and emerging sectors require employees to move outside the office during night, and any unsafe atmosphere would stop women employees to work in night shifts. The Assocham has asked government to provide safe and secure atmosphere to women employees which is conducive to work in night shifts.
