Delhi Daredevils defeated Chennai Super Kings by nine runs in an IPL encounter held at Kingsmead on Thursday (April 23). The star of the match was AB de Villiers of Delhi Daredevils who scored the first century of this year's IPL. Batting at third slot, De Villiers blasted 105 off 54 deliveries, hitting five fours and six sixes. Fiery batting from the South African helped Delhi Daredevils to amass a huge total of 189-5 in 20 overs.
The openers of Delhi Daredevils, Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag returned to pavilion soon after scoring eight and six runs respectively. After their departure, AB de Villiers and Tillakaratne Dilshan steered the ship of Delhi Daredevils to the score of 189 runs. De Villiers remained not out while Dilshan garnered 50 runs off 27 deliveries with six sixes before getting out to Albie Morkel (1-41). Apart from them, Dinesh Karthik (18) and Manoj Tiwary (9) also made ample contributions.
Chasing a mammoth victory target of 190 runs, the opening pair of Parthiv Patel and Matthew Hayden gave Chennai Super Kings a stunning start. Hayden scored 57 runs off 27 deliveries with five fours and three sixes. Suresh Raina also played some powerful shots in his 41-run knock of 27 deliveries before getting out to Pradip Sangwan (3-28) of Delhi Daredevils. Fall of wickets at regular intervals prevented Chennai Super Kings from winning the match. Chennai Super Kings finished their 20 overs just short on 180-9. With this victory, Daredevils have won two out of two in this year's IPL, while the Super Kings have managed just one win from three matches.
