Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina crushed Croatian 16th seed Marin Cilic at the US Open on Thursday to advance into the semis. The sixth seed registered a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 victory over the Croatian.

Del Potro won the first set and took a 3-1 lead in the second. The disappointed Croatian lost 17 of the final 20 games of the match.

Cilic made 53 unforced errors compared to just 24 by Del Potro. The Argentine utilized all the eight of his break-point opportunities. Del Potro will play against the winner of the match between third seed Rafael Nadal of Spain and 11th seed Fernando Gonzalez of Chile for a place in Sunday's final.

In the other semi-final, five-time champion Roger Federer of Switzerland will face Novak Djokovic of Serbia.

Speaking about the match Del Potro said, “In a big match like today you are going to feel nervous at the start, but I fought until the final of it.”

"The windy conditions were tough for both players but I stayed so focussed on my serve and I never missed an easy ball.

"I am very happy to be in the semis and want to be in the final but both players will be tough for me."
