Early on Friday morning, Sri Lanka’s capital city Colombo witnessed a terrible bomb explosion in which 21 people are reported killed and over 40 people are believed to be injured. The explosion took place in a bus in a southern suburb of Colombo. The blast came two days after suspected Tamil tigers rebels blew up a rail track near the Sri Lankan capital wounding 27 people.

Ranjith Gunasekera, Police spokesperson revealed that twenty-one people have been killed, eight of them are women. He further added that about 47 people are injured in the incident. Sri Lankan state officials have blamed the Tamil rebels for a string of recent attacks on public transport including the Wednesday rail track bombing that left eight people dead.

The recent attacks targeting the civilian population of Sri Lanka are being carried out in response to Sri Lankan army’s offensive to retake the Tiger’s northern stronghold in land, sea and air attacks in a civil war that has killed more than 70,000 people. According to analysts what has annoyed the rebels is the military’s upper hand in the latest phase of the long running war.
