Darul Uloom, which had issued fatwa against national song Vande Mataram, has mentioned that the edict could never be withdrawn. The fatwa had asked the Muslims not to recite the national song as certain phrases were not adhering to Islamic principles.

Darul Uloom's Vice Chancellor Maulana Abdul Khalik Madrasi had mentioned that "Fatwa is not an order but a guiding principle. People may abide it or ignore it".

"We issue fatwas only when someone approaches us to seek guidance," he said, adding that the edict, which had been issued before three years, cannot be withdrawn.

But he also mentioned that Darul Uloom has no issues with non-Muslims reciting the song. Jamiat-Ulema-e-Hind during its 30th general session, which was held on Nov 3 in Deoband, had urged the Muslims not to sing the national song as certain phrases are against the tenets of Islam.
