In order to highlight the plight of Tibet and keep it in the international limelight ahead of the August Beijing Olympics, the Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama is due to arrive in London. His London visit will mark the initiation of a 10-day long visit to the United Kingdom. While here, the Dalai Lama is scheduled to address the parliament as well as provide confirmation on human rights to to a parliamentary committee.
The British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has decided that he will not meet the Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama at 10 Downing Street to keep from displeasing the Chinese government. The British PM instead would hold the meeting with Dalai Lama along with the Archbishop of Canterbury at Lambeth Palace. The UK visit of the Dalai Lama, it is expected, will meet with protests from an array of interest groups in London.
There is a strong likelihood that the speech to be delivered at the Albert Hall by Dalai Lama and his meeting with Mr Gordon Brown will get targeted by demonstrators. Scotland Yard has stated that ‘appropriate’ policing will be in place. Apart from this, the Tibetan spiritual leader is also scheduled to meet Conservative leader David Cameron, teach in Nottingham as well as receive an honorary doctorate from London Metropolitan University.
