In a letter penned to the Chinese Premier Hu Jintao recently, the Spiritual leader of the Tibetans, Dalai Lama proffered to dispatch his own representatives to Tibet to calm down tensions following Beijing's crackdown. Envoy Lodi Gyari informed that Dalai Lama was feeling anxious about the situation in Tibet and therefore had offered China to send his own envoys there, who would talk to the natives and calm them down.

The letter from the Tibetan spiritual head to Hu Jintao was sent as a part of efforts directed towards initiating a discussion on a peaceful way in Tibet. Gyari, who had earlier testified at a US Senate hearing on the turmoil in Tibet, remarked that Beijing did not pointedly respond to the Dalai Lama's offer. Adding, he said that Beijing had replied with ‘nothing concrete, just rhetoric.’

The Dalai Lama, who is living-in-exile in India since the failed uprising of 1959 in Tibet that caused him to flee, is campaigning for ‘meaningful autonomy’ for his home land. Exiled Tibetan leaders state that the China's attack the previous month left more than 150 natives dead in Tibet. Beijing, on the other hand, says that the ‘rioters’ killed 20.

This incident has got more highlighted due to China's hosting of the Beijing Olympics in August, causing people world over to disrupt the Olympic flame event. The United States of America, on the other hand, has warned China that a failure to hold a peaceful discussion now with the Dalai Lama on the Tibet issue could toughen the position of moderate pro-Tibetan groups.
