About 500 charging stations for electric cars will be launched in Berlin jointly by German automobile giant Daimler and utility company RWE. The project is slated to be completed in 2009. Under the new project, Daimler and its subsidiary Smart would provide 100 electric cars as well as services for the cars. On the other hand RWE would take care of the development, installation and operation of the charging station.

The project has been christened as ‘e-mobility Germany’. The electric cars have communication equipment that will allow its drivers to get the vehicle charged at different stations, whereas the billing will get done on one account. For the convenience of the people the charging stations would be installed at residential areas, public places like offices, shopping centre and parking lots. The new electric cars would have lithium-ion batteries for rapid charging and longer range.

German government agencies will support the whole project financially and the project would be designed keeping in mind the London-based Daimler project. The chairman of Daimler board, Dieter Zetsche in a statement said that when policy makers, energy suppliers and automotive industry, all work together then success is unavoidable.
