According to the Chairman of the Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic Pavel Rychetsky the Lisbon Treaty put forward by the European Union is ‘not at odds’ with the Czech constitution. The EU can now go ahead with the ratification process of the treaty, which has already been approved by the other 26 members of the bloc.
Now the Czech President Vaclav Klaus will be able to ratify the deal, as the EU is hoping to put the treaty in force from Jan 1, 2010. Klaus had been reluctant to sign the deal even after the Czech parliament gave approval for the deal. He said that he will sign the accord only if the Czech Court gives the permission to go ahead with the same.
Leaders of EU member states met another of the president's conditions for his signature on the accord at their top-level Brussels summit on Thursday.
They agreed to give the Czech Republic an exemption from a part of the treaty, EU's Charter of Fundamental Rights, which Klaus views as a threat to Czech citizens' property rights.
