According to an Indian-origin US researcher, Alzheimer's disease can be prevented by eating curry that contains turmeric. Professor Murali Doraiswamy, of Duke University, Carolina revealed that a component of turmeric called curcumin is very helpful in preventing the spread of plaque found in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. These plaques in human brains affect the electrical signals between brain cells and produces dementia symptoms.
According to Murali Doraiswamy, it has been proved that people who eat a curry meal two or three times a week have a lower risk of dementia. He added that the researchers are working to find out the impact of higher dose of turmeric on Alzheimer's disease. He also siad that it might be possible to develop a curry pill to combat Alzheimer's.
The Indian-origin researcher also stated that apart from Alzheimer's research, studies are also conducted to find out the effect of turmeric in treating many other diseases including cancer and arthritis. According to Dr Susanne Sorensen, Head of Research at the Alzheimer's Society, the cases of Alzheimer's are found to be very low among Indian communities that regularly eat curcumin. Professor Doraiswamy mentioned that eating curry will only help if one maintains a good diet and take plenty of exercise.
