The Panaji bench of the Bombay High Court has ordered the government of Goa to develop a state Human Rights Commission by 2009-end.
The order was given several months after the Goa government failed to come up with a decision with government of Maharashtra and the Maharashtra human rights violation cases for solving the human rights violation cases of Goa.
The bench of Justice S.B. Deshmukh and U.D. Salvi on Tuesday ordered to set up the commission by Dec 31.
This step comes after a student, who was a victim of human rights violation, wrote a letter stressing the need for a SHRC in Goa. The government had demanded the court to provide time for carrying out decisions with Maharashtra authorities, to arrive at a conclusion.
However, with no perceptible development on the assurances given by the state government, D'Souza approached the high court again in September seeking judicial intervention.
