The Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party have announced on Tuesday that the parties will contest for the Maharashtra polls, slated to go on Oct 13, together.
The Chief Minister of Maharshtra, Ashok Chavan, Maharashtra Congress president Manikrao Thakre as well as Union Civil Aviation Minister and NCP chief, Praful Patel, who addressed the media from the Mumbai headquarters of the Congress mentioned that Congress will be contesting for 174 seats where as NCP will be in race of 114 seats.
The candidates will be announced on Thursday.
The Democratic Front, the Congress – NCP collaboration, has been holding the reins of Maharashtra state government for the past 10 years. Both the parties had come into terms for continuing the successful alliance.
During 2004 elections, Congress had been contesting in just 157 of the 288 seats where as NCP had been battling for 127 seats, with remaining seats being contested by their allies. Out the 157 seats, Congress had managed to grab 69 seats with NCP going for the major number of seats with 71.
In the April-May Lok Sabha elections, the Congress contested 25 of the 48 seats in the state and won 17, while the NCP won only eight of the 21 seats it contested.
