Congress president Sonia Gandhi has asked the party members to give 20% of their salaries for the measures that are being adopted by central and state governments to pacify drought effects.

"The Congress president proposed that party MPs, legislators, ministers and other salaried office bearers voluntarily offer 20 percent of their salaries for one year from Sep 1," said Congress general secretary Janardhan Dwivedi.

According to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh despite the bad situation due to drought India has the "capacity and capability" to manage it.

Sonia Gandhi has asked the party workers to go in for "austerity measures" so that public and private lives "reflect concern for those who are less fortunate".
